On the whole, Kaagaz is a well-written, well-made and well-enacted satire which will win acclaim. It will appeal more to the classes and hence it is good that it is being premiered on a streaming platform (with simultaneous release in select cinemas of Uttar Pradesh).

Both Pankaj Tripathi and the dead-on-paper rural wedding bandmaster that he plays in Kaagaz face an uphill task. The lead actor has to carry the weight of the entire film on his shoulders. He does so gamely, occasionally allowing his usual understated style to make way for a more demonstrative mode of acting. He pulls off the back-and-forth movement between the two poles without letting the strain show.

To sum it up, ‘Kaagaz’ could have been the go-to movie for those seeking a burst of inspiration, but it ends up being a uni-dimensional masterclass on one man’s acting prowess. Not that we are complaining, but the film had the potential to tug at the heart strings. Alas! It was not to be.

In these days of non-stop discussion-and-discord over official papers (the spirited anthems around ‘hum kaagaz nahi dikhaygene’ still have residual power), Kaagaz could have been an important film. But the plot is littered with clichés, and comes off distressingly dated: the evil aunt rolls her eyes, the bad guys swirl their ‘moochch’, the item girl swings her waist, the sarkari cogs-in-the-wheel smirk, and so on.

All said and done, Pankaj Tripathi acts as the paper-weight holding every aspect of this story together. His scope of acting helps us to establish a connect which remains throughout the film.

Still, Kaagaz is an enjoyable and important film, held together by its largely assured direction and by Tripathi, one of contemporary Bollywood’s finest actors.

At a time when the country is erupting with protests over rights and recognition, Kaagaz’s relevance cannot be undermined. Nor its dream for a society where the alive can live in peace and paper. In the end, we do catch a glimpse of the triumphant hero — the real Lal Bihari Mritak. If only it was a complete picture
