There are three major categories of Metaverse applications: Social Networking Sites (SNS), Virtual Reality Apps, and Augmented/Mixed Reality Apps. SNS are mostly text based platforms that let you communicate with others online. Virtual Reality Apps are similar to SNS except that they allow you to immerse yourself in video games, and Augmented Reality Apps are similar to Google Maps. These apps are usually played inside mobile phones.
Social Networking Sites
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc., are examples of social network sites. On these sites, you can upload pictures, videos, and write posts about anything under the sun. You can also share articles, links, comments, and likes with other users. Most importantly, you can also play games and chat with others.
Virtual Reality Apps
Google Earth, Second Life, Wikitude, and Microsoft Holoportation are examples of virtual reality apps. These apps enable you to access a 3D environment from your own desktop. On these apps, you can explore places, learn about history, travel the globe, and experience life in many different countries.
Augmented Reality Apps
Some Augmented Reality apps are used for navigation purposes such as Google Maps and Waze. However, some AR apps are used to enhance the physical world. Snapchat is an example of this. Snapchat uses augmented reality to overlay messages on whatever you are looking at. A picture taken by the camera automatically gets overlaid with words or images. This feature is called “Stickers.” Similarly, Pokemon Go lets you capture virtual characters that appear in real locations. There are a lot more AR apps out there.
Disadvantages Of Metaverse
Metaverse is not real life
Metaverse is a virtual reality where users have access to create their own avatar. An avatar is a representation of oneself in a digital environment. Avatars take on many different forms such as animals, monsters, aliens, robots, humanoids, etc. When avatars are created they can either be free-roaming or bound to a specific location. Free-roaming avatars are able to move anywhere throughout their virtual world whereas bound avatars are restricted to moving around a specific area.
One of the biggest advantages of using the Metavrse is that people feel like they are actually present in the experience where they are going and doing things with others. However, the disadvantages of the Metavrse are that it takes away from real life. People don’t get to experience what it feels like to walk outside, smell the fresh air, or touch the ground. Another disadvantage is that the user does not receive any feedback about his/her surroundings. If he or she walks off the edge of a cliff or falls down a hole, then there is no way for them to know. In addition, there is no way for the user to interact with anything except for other avatars.
No privacy
Another major advantage of the Metaverse is that it doesn’t give anyone else personal information about you. A downside of the Metaverse is how people could potentially use personal information without permission of the person. You may go out into the Metaverse and meet someone and decide to invite him or her over to your house. Later, you realize that the person never asked for you to send them over and now you are responsible for inviting them over.
No social interaction
The Metaverse is a place where all the avatars live together. There are no humans in the Metaverse, only avatars. There is no way for people to interact with each other socially. If you wanted to talk to someone you would need to find them by searching for them.
No connection to the real world
The Metaverse is just a computer program. While it seems like a lot of fun, you are still technically in front of your monitor. You couldn’t do anything if you didn’t have access to a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
Can be addictive
People who spend time in the Metaverse often become addicted to being inside the virtual world. Since everything happens within the Metaverse, there is no way to tell whether or not something is real. Since nothing can harm you while in the Metaverse, people begin to use it to escape from reality and to avoid dealing with issues that occur in the real world. Many people spend hours upon hours playing video games instead of spending time with family members or friends.
